[News] Raytracing is coming to Minecraft
« on: August 20, 2019, 02:13:07 PM »

Good news, gamers! The world's bestselling game is getting an update!

NVIDIA has just announced the introduction of real-time DXR Raytracing for the Windows 10 edition of Minecraft.
You've probably already heard of it, the game where you craft a world out of blocks and survive solo, or with friends across platforms.
It is mostly known for its basic graphics, but for the gamers looking for a more intense experience, Raytracing could just give them what they need.

Quote
Minecraft with RTX wil refit the entire game with path tracing, a form of ray tracing featuring incredible levels of detail, affecting almost every pixel of every scene.
- NVIDIA

Expect lifelike lighting, reflections and shadows, plus so much more. This is all brought about by the work that game developer Mojang is doing together with Microsoft and NVIDIA.
Check out the link below to see an interactive screenshot so you can compare the difference between RTX ON and RTX OFF:

Quote
Ray tracing sits at the center of what we think is next for Minecraft. RTX gives the Minecraft world a brand-new feel to it. In norma Minecraft, a block of gold just appears yellow, but with ray tracing turned on, you really get to see the specular highlight, you get to see the reflection, you can even see a mob reflected in it.
- Saxs Persson, Franchise Creative Director of Minecraft

Ray tracing improves everything visually and upgrades it to real-time global illumination. This enables light to realistically illuminate blocks and buidings as the world is modified. Lava and Glowstone can illuminate environments, which is good since light is an important factor in the gameplay. Water, glass, ice, and other reflective surfaces show accurate, real-time reflections. Shading and shadowing get lifelike accuracy. Blocks get even more detail from their surroundings. And so much more because the entire game is enhanced.

NVIDIA has also taken into consideration the mods. Ray tracing will be moddable, enabling players to generate endless content for themselves and others. This is a perfect fit to the modding community already present in the game. Minecraft is a game of creativity, exploration and engineering. With RTX, PC Gamers will get to experience their Minecraft worlds like never before.

The RTX feature is coming soon through a FREE update so stay tuned through Mojang and GeForce.com's pages.

In the meantime, you don't have to wait for Minecraft to experience Raytracing. It is already available in games like Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It is also coming out in more games in the future!
