Alongside the fastest graphics cards ever built for consumers, Nvidias Turing-generation of GPUs also made possible some intriguing new features for gamers everywhere. Ray tracing is the easiest to wrap your head around, but deep learning supersampling, or DLSS, is a little more nebulous.

Even if its more complicated to understand though, DLSS has the potential to be the greatest feature of Nvidias 2000-series graphics cards, improving visuals and increasing performance in the same breath. To help you understand just how it works, heres our guide to everything you need to know about Nvidias RTX DLSS technology, so you can decide whether its enough of a reason to upgrade to a new 2080 or 2080 Ti.

WHAT IS DLSS?
Nvidia hasnt been very clear on what exactly deep learning super-sampling actually is, but it does provide a few broad strokes descriptions of it. It revealed the following in its breakdown of the Turing Architecture:

DLSS leverages a deep neural network to extract multidimensional features of the rendered scene and intelligently combine details from multiple frames to construct a high-quality final image. DLSS uses fewer input samples than traditional techniques such as temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) while avoiding the algorithmic difficulties such techniques face with transparency and other complex scene elements.

Aliasing creates the jagged edges of an object in a scene, and the process known as anti-aliasing helps mitigate that effect. In all its different forms, whether its multi-sampling, fast approximate, or temporal, they work by approximating what should appear in the gaps between pixels. DLSS works a little like that, but thats not the whole picture.

DLSS also leverages inferred super-sampling to arrive at its eventual image. That involves rendering content at a lower resolution and making various visual tweaks to make it look like it was rendered at a higher one.

WHAT DOES DLSS ACTUALLY DO?

DLSS provides a better looking overall image without using as much of the graphics cards main processing capabilities as traditional anti-aliasing techniques. In theory, that should free up those resources for additional rendering tasks, thereby opening up the possibility of greater detail levels or higher framerates, depending on the preferences of the user. Nvidia showed it off primarily as a way to counteract the performance issues caused by ray tracing.

In fall 2018, the technical director of Final Fantasy XV claimed that DLSS has a dramatic impact on performance when applied to the game, effectively giving gamers a better looking and higher-frame-rate experience. While that was realized when the game was patched to include the update, the overall frame rate tends to only increase by between 5 and 15 FPS, leaving some gamers to prefer to turn all anti-aliasing techniques off instead for a greater overall frame rate increase.

Similar results can be found in games like Metro Exodus. It supports both ray tracing and DLSS, but in our testing we found that both technologies required some sacrifice framerate and detail, respectively. Enabling them both at the same time left behind a strangely blurred image that detracted from the graphical gains made by ray tracing in the first place. In the end, turning both off leads to a better overall game experience.

Battlefield V was the first game to get ray tracing, and was recently updated with DLSS capabilities too. We havent tested it yet, but DICE claims that it can help maintain visual quality while boosting performance and that further improvements will come as the AI that powers this super sampling technique is enhanced through further training.

Arguably the greatest benefit from DLSS so far have come in the form of synthetic benchmarks. UL Benchmarks Port Royal test saw an increase of up to 50 percent for some RTX cards with DLSS enabled, although many fans noted that the technique could lead to odd flickering effects and an over-sharpened look, throughout the demo.

HOW DOES DLSS WORK?
Nvidia hasnt been very forward with how DLSS actually works, but investigations performed by members of the press have managed to nail down a relatively comprehensive understanding of its methods.

In short, DLSS forces a game to render at a lower resolution (typically 1440p) and then uses an AI algorithm to infer what it would look like if it were rendered at a higher one (typically 4K). It does this by utilizing some anti-aliasing effects (likely Nvidias own TAA) and some automated sharpening. The idea is that the image would look like a 4K image but without the overhead of actually rendering it at that resolution. Thats where the performance enhancement comes from, and ideally, where the maintained visual quality does too.

As Eurogamer explains, the AI algorithm is trained to look at certain games at extremely high resolutions (allegedly 64x super sampling) and is distilled down to something just a few megabytes in size, before being added to the latest Nvidia driver releases and made accessible to gamers all over the world. Its something that must be done on a game by game basis.

In effect, DLSS is a real time version of Nvidias screenshot-enhancing Ansel technology. It renders the image at a lower resolution to provide a performance boost, then applies various effects to deliver a relatively comparable overall effect to raising the resolution.

USEFUL, BUT FAR FROM PERFECT
Deep learning supersampling has the potential to give gamers who cant quite reach comfortable frame rates at resolutions above 1080p, the ability to do so with inference. DLSS could end up being the most impactful feature of the new generation of Nvidias RTX Turing cards. They arent as powerful as we might have hoped and the ray tracing effects are pretty but tend to have a sizable impact on performance, but DLSS could give us the best of both worlds: Better-looking games that perform better too.

The best place for this kind of technology could be in lower-end cards like the rumored GTX 2060 or, if supported, the GTX 1660 Ti. If DLSS gives them the ability to render at higher resolutions and detail levels than their GPU core and memory would typically allow, that could make them very desirable, especially considering the inflated price of the higher-end alternatives.

However, the problem remains that this is an Nvidia technology that requires new hardware and compatible software. At this time, that latter component is notably absent. The list of supporting games is still limited and although that may change, theres little suggestion as yet that DLSS will see widespread adoption. There is also the possibility that more open standards, like Microsofts DirectML, which AMD is interested in supporting, could gain greater traction. Especially since AMD is expected to provide the graphical hardware for next-generation consoles.

It could be that in a year or two DLSS is a commonplace feature in most games due to its ease of implementation and the dominance of RTX GPUs in gamer systems. But if game developers dont implement DLSS en masse, it may end up as something far more niche and unsupported. It could end up like the often (surprisingly) controversial Nvidia Hairworks, which is nice to have, but not a must-have feature.
