Connecting a gaming laptop to an external monitor does increase FPS in some instances and we will discuss why and how to properly set it up in this article. Most modern gaming laptops are using NVIDIA Optimus which makes use of the processors lower-powered integrated graphics to send the display signal to the laptop screen to improve battery life.

The discrete NVIDIA GPU usually sits idle when no GPU intensive tasks are running. But when you run a game, the NVIDIA discrete GPU will be used to render the frames.

In a gaming laptop that uses NVIDIA Optimus, the discrete GPU sends this output to the lower-powered integrated graphics which can result in a bottleneck and lower gaming performance, depending on the game and its graphical settings.

Most MSI Gaming laptops have the option to disable the lower-powered integrated graphics via software, or sometimes, it has a hardware switch that allows you to switch between integrated and discrete graphics like the MSI GT75 Titan.

One way to bypass the integrated graphics is by closing the laptop lid and using an external monitor, or by changing your display settings to only use the external monitor so that the IGPU will not be active while gaming.
We tested this Counter Strike: Global Offensive using an MSI GE75 Raider with a Core i7-9750H and NVIDIA RTX 2070 and the results are promising.

Comparing the performance on using the laptop screen vs an external screen (laptop screen disabled), we saw a 25% increase in FPS performance on CS:GO in 1080p high settings. While playing on the laptop screen, we got an average of 292 FPS while on the other hand, playing on the external monitor with the laptop lid closed gave us an average of 366 FPS.
You can try what works for you as results can vary with different MSI Gaming laptops, as well as with different games.  Hopefully, this quick article gave you an idea of how you can increase FPS with something as simple as using an external monitor.

Game streaming has become popular where gamers can build a community of fanbase to share their gameplay with on different platforms. Thanks to NVIDIAs constant improvement with NVENC, streaming has been made so much easier using NVIDIA hardware that is packed on MSI Gaming laptops.

With that, NVIDIA has a guide on how to set up your live stream and how to get started with game streaming using Open Broadcaster Software.
The objective of this guide is to help you understand how to use the NVIDIA encoder, NvEnc, in OBS. We have simplified some of the concepts to make this accessible to a wider audience. If you think we can improve any part of this guide or find any issues or mistakes, please post below and we will be happy to update it.

BITRATE, RESOLUTION AND FRAMERATE

Encoding is all about compressing images. The smaller the size of the image, the less we must compress it and the more quality it keeps. While the same applies for framerate, a viewer can really notice a drop in FPS but not so much in resolution, so we will always try to stream at 60 FPS.

First, run a speed test to determine your upload speed (e.g. Speed Test). We want to use around 75% of your upload speed, as the game and other programs such as Discord will also fight for bandwidth.

Then, we will determine the resolution and FPS that we can use for such bitrate. Most streaming sites have recommendations (Twitch, Mixer,Youtube) on what to use.

You can refer to this for upload speed:

RECOMMENDED SETTINGS

These are our recommended settings for OBS Studio 23.0 and up. Youll want to test and adjust these settings using a private account where you can verify youre happy with the results.

VIDEO TAB SETTINGS

Base (Canvas) Resolution: Set the resolution you normally play at. That is, your desktop resolution (if you play in borderless mode), or the game resolution you normally enter (if you play in full screen).
Output (Scaled) Resolution: Enter the resolution appropriate for your Upload Speed and Bitrate, as we discussed in the previous section.
Downscale Filter: This allows you to select a downscale filter that will provide a small image sharpness enhancement, at the cost of some encoder workload. NvEnc is very efficient and typically runs at low utilization, so we recommend using this with the Lanczos, 32 samples option for the best quality.

FPS: Enter the FPS appropriate for your Upload Speed and Bitrate, as we discussed in the previous section.

OUTPUT TAB SETTINGS

For an easy, out of the box configuration, then do the following:

Output Mode: Simple

Streaming:

Bitrate: Enter the Bitrate appropriate for your Upload Speed, as we discussed in the previous section.

Encoder: Select Hardware NVIDIA NVENC (new).

Enable Advanced Encoder Settings: Checked. This makes the next option visible.

Encoder Preset: Max Quality. If you are streaming 4K resolution on an RTX 20-Series, you will want to reduce this to Quality, as the RTX cards already run image optimizations that previous generations do not.

Recording:

Recording Path: This is the directory where the videos will be saved. Make sure the hard drive you select has enough space!

Recording Quality: High Quality typically works for most users, but you can change this to Indistinguishable Quality if you have enough disk space or are going to do short videos (about 60 seconds).

Recording Format: FLV or MKV.

Encoder: Hardware (NVIDIA NVENC).

This is a bit tricky but easy to get a hang of. make sure you follow these steps when updating.

1. Check the current VBIOS version in Radeon Software.

2. Download the latest VBIOS from the firmware download page on MSI website.

3. Execute "Command Prompt(Admin)".

4. Type "cd " ,paste the path of the VBIOS folder, and press Enter key.

5. Type "fvflash" and press Enter key to update VBIOS, then reboot the system.

6. Open Radeon Setting again and check whether the VBIOS version has been updated.

No one knows how MSI will design their ultra-thin notebooks in the creators field for all day usage, until MSI unveiled their latest ultra slim PS63 Modern during CES show, most of the media gave it very high positive feedback on their reviews.

The PS63 Modern is brand new concept from shapes, colors to the overall design, cutting edge of the shape and blue-gray coating with blue-diamond side coating, the 3 side thin-bezel with brand new hinge style and still could put a HD CAM on top side, IPS display with 72%NTSC and True Color with sRGB calibration for content creators. The enlarged 35% of the Silky Glass Touchpad is very smooth and accurate, it makes user experience much better than most of the other touchpads!

The viewing angle is excellent with good red color present.

Very thin and better hinge design and airflow exhaust design.

THE ULTRA-THIN DESIGN WITH GREAT FIGURES
The PS63 got 3 of 16 figures on features, 1.6kg, 16mm of thickness, over 16 hours of battery life. A good performance with GTX 1050 graphics notebooks in this slim chassis and 16 hours of battery life? Thats really over expectations on performance and usage for most of users and different creators.

Besides of MSI unique features, PS63 comes with Core i7 8565U or Core i5 8265U, all with 4C8T architecture, built-in the GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics or Intel UMA inside the ultra slim body. Mine on hand PS63 is Core i5 8265U and GTX 1050 Max-Q version, with 512GB SSD and 16GB main memory. That's more than enough for normal users with this ultra-thin chassis and light weight.

Compared to my current working notebook GS63, the GS63 was just 1.89kg weight and 17.7mm of height, but PS63 even over 10% smaller and slimmer as 16mm, could put in any 15 backpacks or most of the regular 14 backpacks. Even side backpacks will be easier to handle this thinner machine.

PS63 is easy to put in all of the 15 and most 14" notebook backpacks or side backpacks.

The dimension of PS63 on the top is 357x233x16mm, more than 10% smaller and slimmer than GS63 of 17.7mm height!

The weight of PS63 Modern is 1653.5g with GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics and strong cooling system, the cube adaptor is 90W but smaller than regular 60W adaptor and only under 200g of the weight. Its really light with lots of features and good SPEC. combinations.

The weight of PS63 is 1653.5g, but it feels lighter when you carry it!

New creative style of Cube adaptor for PS63 series is around 198g.

MORE ON POWERFUL PERFORMANCE THAN EXPECTED
This PS63 comes with Core i5 8265U, it's 15W TDP CPU, and with GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics, its lower power version of GTX 1050. People may think its not good enough for users to play games, create 3D designs, or used for video after-works and editing. But I would like to say it's really surprised me on the performance with benchmark results.

Take a look on the 3D Mark series first, the 3D Mark 11 P7502 is really similar as regular Core i7 7700HQ + GTX1050 of performance, and same situation as the 3D Mark Fire Strike comes with 5488 score. When check on Time Spy test on DirectX12 features, PS63 got 1839 score.

3D Mark 11 P7502 at good score.

3D Mark Fire Strike 5488 score is also strong.

These test above showed different detail level of gaming performance, also showed how good is the PS63 cooling system design, the GTX 1050 Max-Q version comes with 2 fans and 3 heatpipes, 1 pipe is for Core i7/i5 U series CPU, 2 pipes with large heatsink to make GTX 1050 Max-Q stay cool and quiet with higher GPU Boost possibility. Thats why the 3D Mark related performance got same level as Core i7 7700HQ and normal GTX 1050 graphics performance, the devil is in the detail!

BOOSTED ON CPU PERFORMANCE AND GOOD FOR VIDEO EDITING
When I got this PS63 Modern with this i5 version, I did not expect the performance is such high as the tested results. Even with Cinbench R15, the OpenGL score achieve 76.73fps, CPU Multi Cores is 650cb, even Single Core of 156cb is closer to regular i7 7700HQ level. The CPU Boost is able to run up to 3.4GHz during my tests, and mostly it runs around 2.7GHz~3GHz. The X264 FHD benchmark runs at 23fps score, similar as i7 7700HQ at 24fps. And if you consider to play some games or design some content with DX12 at Full HD resolution, you could check on the Mid-High level benchmark in Final Fantasy XV benchmark tool, the result is 6207 score with Very High result under DX11 mode.

The CineBench R15 Score is better than most of slim notebooks with i5 U series.

The 512GB SSD separated with 2 Drives, check on the Drive C: at great speed! 3184MB/s of read speed,1952.5MB/s of write speed, its worth of the price value!

CONCLUSION: MORE POWERFUL USAGE THAN JUST ALL DAY WORKS
When I bring the PS63 outside used for 1 hour then at idle mode, it showed "37 hours 49min remaining", after some internet surfing, Youtube Video broadcasting with my earphone, and even download few software with Silent Mode around 3 hours, the battery still over 70%, and estimated battery life still over 12 hours.

Idle with 37 hr49min remaining? I never saw this number in any notebook with GTX1050 level graphics.

The PS63 is not only light using as other UMA slim notebooks, this model is good for normal content creators and video editing after works, good enough at gaming performance for FHD at Mid-level preset gaming, the keyboard type feedback is good, whole chassis design and body was solid, enhanced hinge design make PS63 easier to use 1 finger to open but stay still, and over 16 hours of internet surfing battery life, everything seems combined perfectly on the latest PS63 Modern!

If you want to use PS63 out of battery, you should get a set of tea for whole day to use and wait, few hours of coffee time will be too short to hang out with PS63!

Are you new to PC gaming who just got a shiny new gaming rig/laptop, and you arent sure what games you want to buy from Steam? Then youve come to the right place. Weve put together a list of games from different genres to make it easier for you to spend your ₱1500 worth of Steam credits.

Street Fighter V + Champion Edition upgrade

Street Fighter is one of the most iconic games in the fighting game community. Street Fighter V brings together all the beloved characters and a surprising amount of action with a unique fighting system for each character. DLC bundles are affordable, too; hence we added the Champion Edition upgrade in this recommendation.  This game will cost you ₱1,448 with the Champion Edition Upgrade.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Though this game might be a few years old, its still one of the best games ever to hit this genre. Based on the fantasy novel by Andrezej Sapkowsi, this role playing game has a quest heavy main story that will keep you busy through its rich and expansive open world. Priced at ₱1,395 on Steam, its one of the must-have games in your Steam library even if you didnt play the first two installments.

Grand Theft Auto V Premium Online Edition

Grand Theft Auto V fans can now have a new experience through online-play. Im sure everyones played a Grand Theft Auto game at some point as the game is pretty much defined by shootem up, free-for-all the carnage, and high-speed police car chase. With the online play, however, you can have access to roleplaying servers and have tons of fun. Think of it as World of Warcraft, but youre on GTA. GTA V Premium Online Edition currently priced at ₱1,328 on Steam, but do keep in mind that this is a Rated R game.

Rainbow Six: Siege Deluxe Edition

Rainbow Six: Siege is one of the up and coming esports titles that everyone must get try out. Its not like your usual FPS games like CS:GO or Call of Duty where run and gun mechanic is pretty much the gist. In Rainbow Six: Siege, team play and strategies are often more important than gunplay, and winning objectives is more critical than fragging. This game has a steep learning curve, but the level of challenge is pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Priced at ₱1100, Rainbow Six: Siege Deluxe Edition will get you the full game and unlocked Year 1 operators that will get you started in explosive 5v5 action in no time.

Cities: Skylines Deluxe Edition

Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city-building simulation genre. The game introduces new aspects of gameplay to understand the excitement and challenges of creating and maintaining a true city while drawing on some well-established city-building activity tropes.  Cities: Skylines Deluxe Edition is worth ₱999.95 on Steam, and it will give you the base-game with some added content such as global monuments, and a digital artbook containing drawings of in-game buildings.

Serious Sam 3: BFE

Remember the golden age of arcade-style FPS games where you are just playing to make things go boom? Then Serious Sam 3: BFE is for you as it is the kind of FPS where you hold the gun trigger and lay waste to a never-ending onslaught of attackers. You play as a one-man army with a destructive arsenal of weapons and melee attacks. This game will cost you ₱999.95 on Steam, and it is one of the classics that you will never forget.

GAMING Notebooks / [REVIEW] MSI Alpha 15 Review: Phoenix Rising?
« on: January 07, 2020, 02:45:18 PM »
Check out this MSI Alpha 15 Review by UNBOX PH

Team Red All the Way

If youve been paying attention to PC World lately, then you know that AMD has bounced back and has made a killing this year by providing a great price to performance ratio with their Ryzen and Navi products.

Its been a while since Ive tested out gear from Team Red so when MSI asked if I wanted to test out one of their newest releases thats armed with a Ryzen CPU and their 7nm Radeon RX GPUs the Alpha 15 I had to jump on the chance to check out myself to see if it was worth all the hype it was getting.

Pros
All the ports youll ever need
Great keyboard with per-key RGB
120Hz Display with FreeSync2

Cons
Speakers dont give the advertised Giant feel

Shes a THICC girl

One of the first things I noticed about the MSI Alpha 15 is they arent using the usual dragon emblem on the lid. Theyve nixed the usual weve come to associate with the brand and replaced it with a Phoenix. According to the brand, its a way of distinguishing their fully AMD notebooks from their G series offerings. I do have to warn you that the decal they used did start to peel off after just a week of taking it in and out of my backpack.

The second thing was that the notebook is thick; thicker than a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Huawei Mate 30 Pro on top of it. Thankfully though, its much lighter than it appears to be and thats because the chassis of the Alpha 15 is primarily made out of plastic; save for the lid.

This also means that this laptop doesnt leave you wanting when it comes to its I/O ports; complete with illuminated USB ports and an SD card slot thats not always available on gaming notebooks. This is something that creators like myself appreciate since it means that I dont have to worry about forgetting to bring my card reader.

By the way, the placement of the USB ports on the right side is closer to the bottom of the notebook and can be a bit bothersome if you have a smaller table to work on. It can also be a bit of an eyesore if you value cable management.

Great Display, Audio Is a Let-Down

The Alpha 15 is equipped with a 15.6-inch Full HD 120Hz display that supports FreeSync2. It certainly gets the job done if you watch videos on your laptop and the refresh rate should definitely help out with some of the more popular eSports titles.

One thing that MSI advertises as one of the key specs of the Alpha 15 is the Giant Speakers and, while they were pretty large, the sound quality wasnt worth writing home about. Youll most likely be using a pair of gaming cans anyway but I was expecting a lot more out of them.

A Keyboard for Higher End Laptops

One thing that the folks over at MSI were proud to highlight was their continued partnership with SteelSeries and being able to deliver per-key RGB lighting for that little bit of gamer flex. This is a feature that they usually reserve for their G series notebooks so its good to see it make its way on this notebook.

Of course, none of that matters if the typing experience isnt good. Thankfully though they came through and I quite enjoyed typing away on the Alpha 15. The keys are spaced out just right, with the right amount of travel in case you have to bust out a quick report or two.

Sadly, the same cannot be said about the trackpad on this laptop. It is a little lackluster but youre most likely going to have a mouse on hand anyway.

The First 7nm Technology Gaming Laptop

The main draw for the Alpha 15 is definitely the fact that theyve gone all-in with AMD for this notebook.

Youve got a Ryzen 7 3750H at the heart of it with an AMD Radeon RX 5500M that utilizes 7nm tech. This is rounded out with 16GB of DDR4 RAM (base model comes with 8GB) and a 512GB NvME SSD for the review unit that they sent out to us. I was very eager to see what the performance would be like on this device so I tested it on a couple of games that have been on my backlog.

As you can with the charts above, gaming performance was OK. I was honestly expecting a little bit more oomph but I reminded myself that MSI was positioning this as an entry-level to mid-tier offering. Its still pretty decent though and, if youre mostly into eSports titles, I can definitely see the Alpha 15 crushing those games easily.

Temps were pretty good though with the GPU hovering at around the mid-80s. Admittedly, I wasnt able to check out the temps if the laptop wasnt sitting flat on the desk but, given that you have a lot of mesh on the bottom, I can see it do wonders for airflow if you have a stand.

Battery Life is as Expected

Lets face it. Gaming notebooks arent meant to go the distance but you are getting a fair amount of juice with the Alpha 15. I did a video loop test to see how long it took for the notebook to go from 100% to 20% and I got a solid 4 hours and 35 minutes with Airplane Mode enabled, the display at 50%, and the volume at 50% as well.

With heavier tasks such as typing up articles, responding to email, and watching a couple of YouTube videos, I got about 3 hours out of this laptop.

Verdict: Ride the AMD Wave

Theres a lot that MSI got right with the Alpha 15 and they definitely have a good amount of checks on the plus column.

Youve got a healthy selection of I/O that doesnt leave you wanting, a great keyboard with even better RGB (if thats your thing), and a display that puts it at par with other notebooks in its price bracket. Youre also getting decent performance out of the hardware in terms of gaming. You will have to keep within Medium presets for the most part, which is a bit of a bummer since weve seen other configurations slightly edge out this purely Team Red build.

I do have to give props to MSI for outing a fully AMD configured laptop thats the first to utilize the 7nm Radeon RX GPUs as well. If you like what theyve been doing so far, you might want to ride the wave and put this on your list of notebooks to consider if youre in the market.

The MSI Alpha 15 is priced at Php 62,995 for the base configuration that comes with 8GB of RAM. It also comes with the AMD gaming bundle with each purchase that allows you to choose from games like Borderlands 3 and The Outer Worlds.
